Korean Folk Village in Yongin

One of the things that I admire about South Korea is how it’s able to preserve its roots despite making great strides in innovation. Just think about Seoul. It’s home to stunning historical attractions like Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung, but it also houses urban landmarks like Lotte World Tower and the DDP. Another example — entertainment content. While a lot of K-dramas, films, and webtoons feature the modern Korean society, you also have plenty of historical dramas that deal with the monarchy, and recently, even ancient zombies! (I’m pretty sure you know more titles than I do, so I won’t bother naming a few. 😉)

In many ways, I’ve realized that to appreciate Korea is really all about actively encountering its past and present. Since these days it’s easier to see the country’s modern and progressive side, I’ll talk about the best place to visit for a fun time-travel experience: Korean Folk Village (or Minsok Village)! This is an attraction that’s perfect for those who want to gain a deeper appreciation of Korean culture (especially expats who just arrived!), those who want to spend a nice weekend in Gyeonggi-do, and those who are visiting. Below I’ll share more of the things that you can expect, but first, here’s the Korean Folk Village ticket deal that you can grab!

What to Expect When You Visit Korean Folk Village

Quite a lot, to be honest! I’ve only listed a few below so you can have an idea of what to expect, but as a tip, make sure to explore the nooks and crannies of the village, which are all Instagrammable. (Another tip: There’s a hanbok rental in the area, so if you want to blend in the setting, do rent a set!)

1. Folk Village

Yes, let’s start with the obvious! The attraction is all about folk villages during the Joseon Dynasty, so as you explore, you’ll find a lot of humble houses with interesting stories. Take for example the above photo, which features jeong-nang. This is a wooden bar or gate that’ll tell you whether someone’s home or not. Definitely saved a lot of people back then from knocking!

2. Meaningful Shrines

Commonly featured in Korean dramas, the photo above shows Seonangdang, which is a shrine that acts like the guardian of the village.

3. Social Life & Setting

If you’re a Korean drama fan, you will definitely feel delighted once you see familiar places at the Korean Folk Village. A lot of shows actually filmed here, including 100 Days My Prince, Arang and the Magistrate, Jewel in the Palace, Moon Embracing the Sun, and My Love from the Star.

4. Museums

To let you see the various tools, instruments, and simple home furnitures that early Koreans used, make sure to stop by the village’s various museums!

5. Cultural Performances

Aside from the LED Dance Show on the video (again, the mix of old & new), Korean Folk Village also delights visitors with wedding, folk, and martial arts-themed shows! Several performances are held on the street, and the major ones happen before lunch and dinner time.

6. Amusement Park & Retro Arcade

If you’ll travel with your friends and family, you will love the amusement park in Korean Folk Village, which has 14 rides for all ages! They also have a Korean retro arcade, which is a nice place to play some games and take your photos too. (If you’ll visit with a baby, there’s also a nursery room where you can leave them with a companion.)

7. Public Market (Korean Food Court)

When you get tired or hungry from touring, you can visit the food court, which is made to look like a public market! Here, you can have Korean pancakes, buckwheat noodles, makgeolli, bibimbap, stew, and more.

Korean Folk Village also has a Halal restaurant called Terrace Green, as well as some spots to get some coffee.
